Gin & Tonic sorbet

It's almost the weekend. Time to celebrate.

This sorbet, nay this pillowy delight of boozy snow, is divine. In the past, I haven't been crazy about gin (there was an incident in college), but it's been getting on my good side this summer. Certainly, this sorbet was a big tipping point in my developing appreciation for the juniper flavor.

Because what could be better than a gin & tonic than a frozen gin & tonic? And what could be better than enjoying a frozen gin and tonic from your balcony watching the sun set? That's as good as it gets.

Watermelon Rosé Sorbet

Growing up in Texas, summer always meant eating watermelons. I never knew watermelons could be round, because we would always get giant 4 lb. oblong ones that were bigger than most dogs and many babies.

Now as an adult, summer means enjoying a glass of sparkling rosé wine. At parties or at brunch, it's always festive and refreshing.

Sorbets are easy to make, and many don't require an ice cream maker. The alcohol content of the rosé wine keeps the juice from freezing solid. Try freezing your favorite juice with a splash of liquor (not more than 1/2 a cup for 2 cups of freezable liquid). Then scrape the frozen juice with a fork until you end up with a fluffy flavored granita.

Here's how another blogger makes watermelon granita.

Grapefruit Campari sorbet

The fresh grapefruit tartness and the beautiful color make you forget that there's alcohol in this sorbet.

Does that mean it's ok to eat for breakfast?

Kiwi Ginger

Lime Ginger sorbet is tart and fresh.

Texture in ice cream is usually accomplished with chocolate chunks and candy swirls. Sometimes I prefer the natural texture of fruit, which can be refreshing and surprising.
I've always loved the crunch of kiwi. It's like the tobiko of the plant world.

the first tasting party

Some friends came over to try new flavors and to try their hand at painting. White Strawberry Sangria with Clementines was the unexpected flavor of the day:

Pear Ginger was our ice cream tasters' favorite flavor:

It had the right amount of sweetness and spice. The lightness of the flavors help you forget that you're eating something unhealthy. And that's the trick to this whole ice cream thing: Eating well and staying light.
